NFL UK Preview: Tennessee Titans v Los Angeles Chargers

NFL action is back in London for the second consecutive week and we have already been treated to a great game one when the Seahawks demolished the Raiders 27-3. This time around we have a much closer contest between the Tennessee Titans and the Los Angeles Chargers. Both teams are in good form heading into the week seven matchup and this game could fall either way, depending on how well each team plays to their strengths.

The Tennessee Titans made some very clever and big moves in the summer and became one of the dark horses for this season. They haven’t lived up to that expectation sitting at an even 3-3 record. They started the season with a loss to the Dolphins but followed up with a three-game winning streak, including the scalp of the Jags and defending Superbowl champions, the Eagles. They are currently sitting on a two-game losing streak, after losing to the Bills and then being shut out by Joe Flacco and the Ravens last week.

The Titans are a team that relies on their defence rather than going toe-to-toe offensively with their opponents. They showed how good their defence can be when they limited the Jags to 6 points and no touchdown. With defensive players like Malcolm Butler and Jayon Brown, they can be a very tough team to break down and score multiple touchdowns on.

Their offence isn’t the best with Marcus Mariota being a very hot and cold quarterback. He has only passed for two touchdowns this season and they were in the same game. This can be expected though as they added former Patriots running back Dion Lewis. With him and Derrick Henry in the backfield, the Titans can crush teams on the ground, even if you’re expecting them to.

The Los Angeles Chargers have started the new season a little better than their opponents as they sit on a 4-2 record heading into week seven. However, people shouldn’t read into their record that much as they’ve had quite an easy schedule so far, coming up against and beating teams like the Browns, Raiders, 49ers, and Bills. Their two losses currently show they can’t hang with the best of them as they have lost to the Rams and the Chiefs. They are currently on a three-game winning streak, which will definitely give them the confidence of beating the Titans.

The Chargers are completely different to their opponents as they try and outscore their opponents rather than trying to hold their opponents to a low score. Philip Rivers and his offence definitely haven’t struggled to score this season as the QB has thrown for a total of 15 touchdowns. He has also had massive help from running back Melvin Gordon who has scored a total of nine touchdowns, three of them receiving and six of them rushing. Gordon has definitely put his name into the hat for being one of the best runners with the ball in the league right now and if he can find the gaps in a strong Titans defence, it could be a walk in the park for him and the Chargers.

Prediction

This a seriously even matchup as the Titans offence isn’t good enough to punish the Chargers poor defence and the Chargers offence may struggle against a good Titans defence. It will be interesting to see which weakness shows through more as that’s what will determine a winner. Gordon and Rivers may just be too strong for the Titans defence and they’ll be leaving London with a win, but a very close win. I’ll go for a 28-21 scoreline for the Chargers, however, I will not be surprised if the Titans end up taking the win.
