NFL Rookie of the Year Awards Betting Preview

The 2022 NFL Draft has been characterised as being deep in talent but without the elite potential star power of previous years. Without any clear frontrunners, it’s extremely hard to predict the winner in either the Offensive and Defensive rookie awards. Follow our betting guide and try to pick out the winners from the leading contenders below…

Offensive Rookie of the Year Contenders

With most of the top picks coming on the defensive side of the ball, you might have to look a little further down the draft results to predict the winner of the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Kenny Pickett – 5/1

With three of the last six winners of the award being quarterbacks, it’s little wonder the bookmakers make Kenny Pickett as the most likely contender. The odds seem a little on the skinny side though as Pickett is far from guaranteed the starting role ahead of Mitchell Trubisky.

He only has to look at the 2021 draft class to know to take nothing for granted. It was loaded with quarterback talent including Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones but it was wide out Ja’Marr Chase who won the award. Back Kenny Picket to triumph with great odds at Bet Dukes.

Drake London – 7/1

Following the instant, electric production from Ja’Marr Chase for the Bengals last year, wide receivers are back in draft fashion. Six were drafted in the first round in 2022 with Atlanta-bound Drake London leading the betting. London will immediately be the Falcon’s best wideout and will be the focal point of the offense alongside last year’s first-round pick, tight end Kyle Pitts. The only trouble will be getting him the ball.

Atlanta’s options at quarterback are Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, and Feleipe Franks, who struggle to inspire confidence that Pitts will get the supply he needs to flourish. Make BetDuel your American Football betting destination.

Breece Hall – 8/1

The New York Jets picked running back Breece Hall from Iowa State with the 36th overall pick in the NFL Draft. He has the potential to be a great addition to the Jets’ rushing attack and is likely to see a lot of action alongside current RB Michael Carter. There’s a buzz surrounding the rookie back, a Kansas native, and he made a big impression in the Big 12. This Wichita man could be the first Jets rookie to take home the award since Joe Namath nearly 60 years ago. Get all the latest NFL odds with Bet365.

Treylon Burks – 7/1

Another wide receiver who is set to make a big impact is Arkansas alumni Treylon Burks. Burks is joining an established Titans offense run by the experienced campaigner Ryan Tannehill. With A.J. Brown being traded to the Eagles, Tennessee are banking on the quick development of Burks and are sure to give him a lot of the ball.

Christian Watson – 8/1

One name that is sure to garner support is Christian Watson, the North Dakota State Bison, who was 34th overall pick. The wide receiver will be linking up with one of the most experienced and talented quarterbacks in the game in Aaron Rodgers. He may have been picked in the second round, but he will instantly become one of the most-targeted players in Green Bay’s offense following their release of Davante Adams.

Defensive Rookie of the Year Contenders

This year’s Defensive award is particularly hard to call. A number of very good players drafted early won’t be starting on Day 1 this year so it becomes a question of who will thrive this season based on their team situation.

Kayvon Thibodeaux – 11/2

The past three Defensive Rookies of the Year have had pass-rushing as their primary assignment, making Kayvon Thibodeaux the favourite. The outside line-backer for the New York Giants is going to be a contributor from the opening game day and during his college career had an incredible ability to beat pass blockers.

There are no guarantees in the NFL Draft and the Giants haven’t had much success post Eli Manning, but Thibodeaux has all the potential to be their next Michael Strahan. Bet £10 and get a £10 free bet with BetStorm.

Aidan Hutchinson – 6/1

Another leading contender is Aidan Hutchinson, who is all about getting to the quarterback. The second overall pick for the Lions is set to play an important role for their defence as a week one starter, so if he stays healthy and performs to his ability, he will take some beating. Detroit has been short in the pass rushing department for a while now, and he has the tools to make an instant impact.

Travon Walker – 6/1

Number 1 draft selection Travon Walker is a short price for the award, but may be one to avoid. While Hutchinson and Thibodeaux are viewed as instant contributors, Walker was picked because of his potential, and he has a lot of work to put in before he’s an elite pass-rusher. Walker is also joining a Jaguars team with some strength in his position in the form of Josh Allen. He’ll have to prove he is a better rusher than Allen in training camp before he is an automatic starter, never mind a contender for the best rookie defender of the season. Devin Lloyd – 9/1

Underneath these three front-runners is another new Jaguar in the shape of line-backer Devin Lloyd. His production at Utah was really impressive, notching up 256 tackles, 15.5 sacks, and 43 tackles for loss during his collegiate career. Lloyd could well play a more important role than Walker in their rookie season.

Kyle Hamilton – 10/1

No safety has won the award since Mark Carrier in 1990, but Kyle Hamilton could be set for a big season with the Ravens. His body of work suggests he’s more than capable of being an impact player in the NFL. He’s a playmaker at multiple different levels of defence and has a do-it-all nature to his game.

The Notre Dame star struggled in the combine which caused the one-time, top-5 prospect to drop to the 14th overall pick. Baltimore, though, have a history of trusting what they see on tape over the stopwatch, and have no concerns about Hamilton’s pace. Both Ravens legends – Ed Reed and Terrell Suggs – struggled similarly in the speed test and slid down the picks. If he can make even close to the impact that those pair made he has to be a contender.
