10 potential trade destinations for Luis Castillo before the 2022 deadline

The Luis Castillo trade rumors in 2022 are starting to hit a fevered pitch. The Cincinnati ace is undoubtedly one of the best players available on the trade market right now and will likely be the most impactful starting pitcher who changes teams before the trade deadline.

Of course, that has created plenty of rumors and speculation about potential Reds trades that could be in the works and where Castillo will finish the season.

Luis Castillo Trade Deadline Destinations

For now, all of the Luis Castillo trade rumors in 2022 are just rumors. But when there is specific Luis Castillo trade news about where he’s going to end up, where is that likely to be? Let’s take a little time to look at 10 potential trade destinations for Luis Castillo.

Giants

The Giants know that if they’re going to make the postseason and make some noise, it’ll have to happen with pitching.

They just don’t seem to have enough of it outside of Carlos Rodon and Logan Webb. With an older team, San Francisco could decide to throw caution to the win and go for it in 2022, which could lead to the Giants making a bold move for Castillo.

Padres

The Padres have gotten consistent starting pitching this season, even while using a six-man rotation for much of the year. But they still seem to be a little concerned with their starting pitching and seem open to trading Blake Snell or Mike Clevinger.

If they decided to shake things up, Castillo will surely be someone they go after in hopes of adding another frontline starter.

Braves

With Ian Anderson and Charlie Morton underperforming, the Braves have to be a little concerned with their rotation.

They also don’t know how much longer youngster Spencer Strider can maintain his current pace. Even with Kyle Wright and Max Fried dealing, adding Castillo would be massive for the defending champs, who showed last summer that they aren’t afraid to make bold moves.

Rays

Adding payroll is not something the Rays do often or without careful consideration. But they have to consider it with a pitcher like Castillo.

After all, the Tampa rotation has been hit by injuries and the Rays always seem to have valuable prospects in their farm system to trade. That’s why the Rays can’t be left out of the Luis Castillo trade rumors in 2022.

Mets

With Max Scherzer back from the IL and Jacob deGrom on his way, the Mets don’t have a huge need for a frontline starter. But there’s no doubt that they are built to win now and may take an aggressive approach at the deadline.

The Mets know that Castillo can be a difference-maker, and if they think one of their National League rivals could get him, they may throw their hat in the ring as serious candidates as well.

Twins

With all of the injuries to Minnesota’s rotation this season, the Twins will surely be active in the Luis Castillo trade rumors in 2022. They’ve done a good job of making it work with Joe Ryan and Sonny Gray leading the way and should get some of their injured starters back at some point.

However, both the Guardians and White Sox are still within striking distance, so the Twins will likely need some outside help to secure the division. It may not be pitching that Minnesota goes after, but if that’s the case, Castillo is a possibility for them.

Dodgers

This is the team that went out and got Max Scherzer at the deadline last year, so the Dodgers will surely be players for Castillo.

Granted, the Los Angeles rotation isn’t in dire need of help with Clayton Kershaw, Tony Gonsolin, Tyler Anderson, and others. But the Dodgers are always shooting for the stars and they know adding high-end talent is how they’ll win another championship, so they will be in the mix for Castillo’s services.

Blue Jays

With the Blue Jays reeling in July, one gets the sense that they need to do something significant and drastic at the deadline to turn the tide. With Jose Berrios struggling and Hyun Jin Ryu getting hurt, the Jays don’t have the rotation they thought they’d have this year, which is what has held them back.

At the same time, they should have plenty of young talent in their organization to create an enticing trade package for Castillo. Adding him would surely change the look of their rotation and help Toronto get things cranking in the second half of the season.

Cardinals

The Cardinals have Miles Mikolas and Adam Wainwright, but that’s not going to be enough in a tight division race. Dakota Hudson has been solid, but outside of those three, nobody in the St. Louis rotation has made at least 10 starts this year.

Not only could the Cardinals use another frontline starter but they just need more depth and consistency. Frankly, adding anybody who can consistently take the ball every five days would be huge for the Cardinals, although a pitcher like Castillo would be a difference-maker for them.

Yankees

The Yankees have already been a big part of the Luis Castillo trade rumors in 2022. Of course, at first glance, the Yankees already have five starters that would make most teams jealous. But could the Yankees be concerned that their rotation is built for the regular season rather than postseason success?

Plus, with the best record in baseball, the Yankees can taste a championship and could be willing to do something big at the deadline to boost those title hopes.

That could lead the Yankees to make a bold leap and acquire Castillo to boost an already strong starting rotation.
