The three division progress to the postseason for a shot at the World Series. Of the other teams, the two teams with the best record take part in a winner-takes-all wildcard game. The winner of that game moves in the Division Series to face the top seed.
The Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are the founding members of the American League East. Movement has been frequent with the Jays joining in 1977 and the Rays becoming a part of the division 21 years later.
The AL Central only came into existence in the 1990s. Previously scattered elsewhere, the White Sox, Royals, Cleveland and Twins were founding members with the Tigers joining just a year later. Cleveland is the most successful team in the history of the division.
Founded in 1969, there’s been plenty of change to the AL West over the years. Only the Angels and Athletics are ever-presents, with Houston joining from the National League in 2013. The Astros have since been a force in the American League standings, winning three straight division titles in the back end of the 2010s.
Seattle joined as an expansion team in 1977. The Rangers, having changed the franchise from the Washington Senators, joined in 1972.
