Although established in 1969, the National League East has had some change over the years. The Montreal Expos became the Washington Nationals. Atlanta joined from the NL West in 1994, and the Miami Marlins were an expansion team one year earlier. Only the Mets and Phillies have been there throughout.

Up until 1994, the Cubs, Pirates and Cardinals were all in the National League East – they have since been featured in the National League Central standings.

The NL Central appeared in the 1990s as a new home for the Pirates, Cubs, Cardinals and Reds. They were joined by the Houston Astros, who departed for the American League in 2013.

Having spent most of their history in the American League, the Milwaukee Brewers jumped over to the NL Central standings in 1998.

The Cardinals are the most successful team in NL Central history.

Just a decade or so after the Giants and Dodgers swapped the east coast for the west, the National League West was formed. The Padres joined them as founding members. The Reds, Braves and Astros were also founding members.

Colorado and Arizona joined as expansion teams in 1993 and 1998 respectively. The NL West standings are often among the most exciting in baseball.
