Examining the best free agency fits for Corey Seager

Corey Seager’s free agency is finally underway. The talented shortstop is just reaching the pinnacle of his athletic prime and is expected to draw plenty of interest on the market.

The 2020 World Series MVP will headline a free-agent class that also features the likes of Carlos Correa and Trevor Story. That means that he’s not likely to sign with a team until one of those gets their contract so he can drive his price up as much as he can.

While nothing is set in stone, Seager’s contract prediction is around $30 million per year. He’s expected to sign a long-term deal with a contender but that could mean settling for less money. If not, teams like the Texas Rangers or Chicago Cubs could look to make a run at him for an even bigger paycheck.

Seager is one of the best players in the world and will demand a contract that shows that. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the teams that make the most sense for him right now.

4. Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers could still try and retain Corey Seager. They couldn’t agree on terms of an extension during the season and trading for Trea Turner pretty much means that they have no intention of engaging in a bidding war with other contenders.

But the Dodgers would give Seager the biggest shot to win another ring. He could settle for slightly less money and stay at home to make a deadly infield duo with Turner. It’s a big stretch but he’s a fan favorite in Los Angeles and we’ve seen these things happen before.

3. Tigers

When it comes to Seager’s contract prediction, most people believe that he’ll just take the money regardless of the fit or the chances to win another ring. If that’s the case, he might as well join A.J. Hinch and the Detroit Tigers, a team that has plenty of cash to spend.

The Tigers are reportedly looking to sign Carlos Correa but could make a run at Seager if they strike out on the Puerto Rican. They have a bright future ahead of them with a young, up-and-coming rotation but it’ll be a while before they’re able to compete at the highest level.

2. Astros

The Houston Astros are almost a lock to lose Carlos Correa in free agency, and it’s not just about money. Apparently, the Puerto Rican star is looking forward to a fresh start elsewhere even if the Astros manage to meet his steep salary pretensions.

The Astros will have a tough time trying to fill that void and will most likely pursue Trevor Story and Corey Seager for that purpose. They were a couple of wins away from another World Series trophy and are the team to beat in the American League, so it would make a lot of sense for him.

1. Yankees

Among Seager’s free agents fits, no other team makes more sense than the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers have been craving for a top-notch shortstop since Derek Jeter retired and their refusal to trade for Trevor Story this season makes us think that they’ll go all-in in free agency.

The Yankees have just enough money to offer him and are just a couple of pieces away from being a true contender.

Adding Seager would allow Gleyber Torres to shift to second base, a spot where he’s not often exposed on defense. Aaron Boone‘s team already features plenty of firepower and this would be a massive boost for their chances.
