Five best landing spots for Marcus Semien as a free agent

Marcus Semien’s free agency 2022 is going to draw a lot of attention. He’s coming off the best season of his career and has proven to be one of the most underrated players in the world.

Semien’s free agent fits are many. He’s a versatile player that can play in nearly every spot of the infield, and his timely hitting is always welcome. Also, he’s not expected to fetch as much money and as many years as younger infielders like Corey Seager, Trevor Story, and Carlos Correa.

Multiple teams will have a lot of cash and areas of need in the offseason, and Marcus Semien is one of the best available players right now. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the teams that could make the most sense for the Blue Jays’ star free agent.

5. White Sox

The Chicago White Sox are built to win right now. They need to find a way to sort their nemesis Houston Astros and that might be by adding even more firepower. Nick Madrigal was great for them before going down with a season-ending injury, but he’s now on the Cubs. There are more questions than answers at second base.

While Semien may prefer to play at shortstop, he’d provide the dynamic presence they need in the infield. They already feature a strong offense but adding Semien would make them even scarier. The only issue here is that they don’t have that much money to spare.

4. Mariners

The Seattle Mariners surprised even their own fans last season. Sadly, the outcome was the usual, as they continue to have the longest playoff drought in the Majors. The front office wants that to change right away and they have a lot of financial flexibility.

That’s why most MLB offseason predictions have the Mariners landing at least one top-tier free agent pretty soon. The Mariners have a lot of young talent and a bright future and are just a couple of veterans away from competing. They have the means to get it done.

3. Astros

The Houston Astros are expected to lose Carlos Correa in free agency. The Puerto Rican star could reunite with former skipper A.J. Hinch at Detroit and sign with the Tigers, per multiple reports. That will leave a huge void in Dusty Baker‘s lineup.

Money could be tight at Houston so that could be an issue for Semien. Then again, the Astros are the strongest force in the American League and he’d have a huge shot to win a ring there. Semien and Jose Altuve would be a treat for the eyes.

2. Yankees

Nearly all MLB offseason predictions have the New York Yankees going all-in on Corey Seager. But if there’s something we’ve learned with years is that agents always want to squeeze every single penny out of the Bronx Bombers.

That’s why should the Yankees decide that Seager is out of their league, they could turn their attention to Semien. Semien isn’t as young as Seager so he’d have to settle for a smaller and/or shorter deal. Landing him would finally allow them to shift Gleyber Torres to second base.

1. Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays knocked on the door of the postseason for most of the year. They’re a young, up-and-coming team that’s already ahead of schedule and they’re only going to get better.

But, losing a piece like Semien could also lead to a major regression.

That’s why the Blue Jays need to do whatever they can to bring their veteran infielder back next season. His pairing with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Lourdes Gurriel, and Bo Bichette was just deadly for opposing pitchers. It’s going to take a lot of money, but they oughta do it.
