Patrick Mahomes: Sky is the limit

Many NFL fans, pundits and former players predict who they expect to be a player that takes the NFL by storm at the start of the season, but I’m not sure many would have said that this season it would be Patrick Mahomes II.

The big question is just how has Mahomes done so well in only his second season in the NFL.

Career so far

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Mahomes in the first round (10th overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Mahomes only played one game in his first season in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs, due to being a rotation option with starting quarterback last season Alex Smith.

In his only appearance, which was the final game of the season against the Denver Broncos, Mahomes did pretty well throwing 284 yards and rushing ten yards himself.

Made the starter

This season, Mahomes became the starting quarterback after the Chiefs traded Smith to the Washington Redskins.

Mahomes has certainly stepped up and shown why the Chiefs have made the 23-year-old their starting quarterback.

The 23-year-old has thrown 3,628 yards and 37 touchdown passes from 284 completions, in just eleven games so far this season.

Mahomes particularly shone in the their last game against the Los Angles Rams, where he threw the most yards in his career with 478 to his name and six touchdown passes in the 54-51 defeat to the Rams.

This is not the first time Mahomes has thrown six touchdowns this season, as in week two he threw six touchdown passes for 326 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

How great can he be?

The sky is the limit for Mahomes if he continues to perform like he has this season.

If he continues at this rate, he will end up finishing the season with stats of 5,277 yards and 48 touchdown passes to his name.

The scary thing is that Mahomes is only 23 years of age and considering the likes of Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger are still playing into their late 30s and even early 40s, then Mahomes has at least another 13 seasons in him.

If he carries on like this for another 13 seasons, he will end up with 67,951 yards to his name and 624 touchdown passes by the time he is 36.

This would be right up there with Brady, Brett Favre, Brees and Peyton Manning.

However, if Mahomes continues to improve and get even better he could even overtake all of these players and put himself in the bracket of some of the great quarterbacks in NFL history.

One thing is for sure, Mahomes is certainly one to watch and one to get in your fantasy team for seasons to come, as at the moment he is unstoppable. He averages 329 yards a game and over three touchdown passes a game.
