Ranking the 10 best offensive lines heading into the 2022 NFL season

The offensive line is the most important position group after the quarterback. Which teams have the best offensive lines in 2022? Are there any teams who could exceed expectations due to the big guys up front?

Best offensive lines 2022

In my preseason positions rankings, I’m going to let you know which team has the best offensive line ranking going into 2022.

10. Jets

The New York Jets are a team on the come-up, and one of the reasons they’re worth watching in 2022 is their offensive line. Alijah Vera-Tucker and Mekhi Becton are both high upside players with the chance to be among the best at their positions, and Connor McGovern is one of the better centers.

The rest of the line is solid but unspectacular. This is an upside pick banking on the young guys.

9. Packers

The Green Bay Packers had the best offensive line in the league going into last season. Unfortunately, they enter 2022 with a lot of questions.

David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins both have All-Pro talent but are coming off serious injuries, and we still have no idea what’s going on with Bakhtiari. The loss of the versatile Lucas Patrick hurts their continuity as well.

Even with injuries and questions, the Packers have one of the top offensive lines in 2022 due to their ability to deal with adversity without much drop-off in performance during the Matt LaFleur era.

8. Lions

When the Detroit Lions exceed everybody’s expectations this year, there will be two reasons: Good coaching and a great offensive line.

The Lions have three first-rounders manning the tackle and center positions, and they’re living up to their talent. Left tackle Taylor Decker, right tackle Penei Sewell, and especially center Frank Ragnow are all studs. Their guards could probably be a bit better, but neither positions are alarmingly bad. It’s up to Jared Goff to take advantage of the gifts he’s been given.

7. Cowboys

Not just one of the best offensive lines in 2022, but one of the best offensive lines in the NFL for the better part of a decade. There’s been a bit of an exodus over the past couple of seasons, but guard Zack Martin and tackle Tyron Smith remain, and they’re two of the ten best linemen in the NFL.

First-round rookie Tyler Smith is a mauler, and I trust the Cowboys evaluating line talent as well as any team in the league.

6. Chargers

The media’s darling team features one of the best o-lines in the NFL. In 2021 the Los Angeles Chargers ranked fourth in sack percentage, sixth in pressure percentage, and eighth in yards before contact.

While sometimes a good quarterback or scheme can juice those numbers, typically, being good at run blocking and pass blocking is the sign of a top ten offensive line. After one season, Rashawn Slater appears to be one of the best left tackles in the league, and Corey Linsley remains a top-five center. The only question mark is right tackle, but everywhere else is sterling.

5. Commanders

The Washington Commanders’ incredible offensive line flew under the radar because the rest of the franchise is a dumpster fire. According to ESPN’s win rate stats, Washington had the best run blocking o-line and ninth best pass blocking o-line.

You put a competent quarterback behind these guys with their weapons, that should be a dangerous team. Unfortunately for the Commanders, their quarterback is Carson Wentz, so they’ll have to wait a little longer. The standouts are seventh-round left tackle Charles Leno Jr. and center Chase Roullier.

4. Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs fixed their o-line after getting annihilated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl. That results in KC still having among the best offensive lines in 2022.

Pro Football Reference shows Kansas City as having the third best sack percentage and second most yards before contact in 2021. The center position and left side of their line are as sturdy as any team in the league, but questions remain about the Chiefs’ right tackle position. Creed Humphrey was excellent as a rookie in 2021. He should only get better from here.

3. Browns

It’s a shame Baker Mayfield was so injured last season, and these guys couldn’t get their due. The Cleveland Browns have had one of the best offensive lines in the NFL for years.

However, it flies under the radar due to their general ineptitude as a franchise. Joel Bitonio, Wyatt Teller, and Jack Conklin round out a unit of nasty road graders. It’s an old-school line built for run blocking that mows over the guys standing in front of them. Every defensive line comes away a little worse for wear after a Sunday of battling these monsters.

2. Buccaneers

Passing is king in the NFL, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the best pass-blocking offensive line going into 2022. It’s hard to separate Tom Brady‘s success from his offensive line but considering they gave up the least pressure by a pretty wide margin, I’m willing to award the line.

Ryan Jensen is as mean as they get at the center position, and Shaq Mason will provide an upgrade at guard. Donovan Smith and Tristan Wirfs make the Bucs one of the few teams with two above-average tackles.

1. Eagles

Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson might be getting a little long in the tooth, but they’re still near the top of the league at their positions. The real thrill on the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line is left tackle Jordan Mailata; the former rugby player picked up in the seventh round was fun as hell to watch in the Eagles offense.

Whether he would bludgeon the guy in front of him or get downhill like a freight train to blow up guys in the open field, he was always worth keeping an eye on.

Much of Jalen Hurts‘ success was based around these guys playing to the scheme perfectly. Expect more of that in 2022.
