Grizzlies’ depth around Morant gives them a shot at a deep playoff run

The Grizzlies depth chart 2021-2022 is a big reason why they have been on a tear recently. They are currently on a six-game winning streak which is the longest in the Western Conference. Let’s take a look at the Memphis Grizzlies depth chart in 2022 and break down their recent success.

Grizzlies depth chart 2021-22

The Grizzlies roster this season has been built to provide Ja Morant with the firepower needed to make a deeper push in the playoffs.

Last year, Morant proved that he can thrive under the spotlight of the playoffs. The Grizzlies point guard averaged 30.2 points and 8.2 assists in the first-round loss to the Utah Jazz. The front office was active to add young pieces around him to make sure that the Grizzlies depth chart 2021-2022 could pack a stronger punch.

The roster around Morant

Giving Jaren Jackson Jr. a four-year $104.7 million deal was a good gamble, especially with the injury clause they added in his contract.

Jackson has a versatile offensive game and good shot-blocking abilities. According to basketball-reference.com, so far this season he’s been averaging 16 points and almost two blocks. With the right grooming, he could become one of the young cornerstones Memphis needs around Morant.

Let’s also not forget the stellar contributions of Desmond Bane who Memphis drafted in 2020. He’s taken a phenomenal leap this season, basically improving his numbers in every area. This is mainly due to Memphis prioritizing his development this offseason and increasing his minutes.

Picking up Steven Adams was also interesting considering he lacks perimeter shooting. However, he’s been in his element next to a stretch four like Jackson.

Even with key players like Dillon Brooks, De’Anthony Melton, and Kyle Anderson in the league’s health and safety protocols, Memphis has proven that they are deep enough and can win games consistently.

Ja Morant vs Trae Young

Despite Memphis going 10-2 with Morant out this season, there is no doubt that the team lives and dies with him. He’s been improving consistently every season.

According to nba.com, this year he’s averaging 25.1 points per game while dropping 6.7 assists and grabbing 5.7 rebounds. He may not be an MVP candidate just yet, but he’s surely leading the Most Improved Player charge for now.

He’s been named the Western Conference’s player of the week, and more importantly, his team has been winning.

Trae Young just dropped a 56-point game in a losing effort against the Damian Lillard-less Blazers, and Atlanta is below .500. Must be frustrating!

Both are elite, young talents, but there’s no doubt as to who has the edge in the Ja Morant vs Trae Young debate. Ja has been leading his team to wins, while Trae is struggling to keep his team relevant.

Consistency

Memphis is currently 4th in the Western Conference and they are the only team in the West that has beaten the top 3 teams (Warriors, Suns, Jazz) on their home court.

They are also currently on a six-game winning streak and are deep enough to keep winning consistently.

The only question that remains is if they can keep this charge come playoff time.
