Ranking the best first basemen in MLB ahead of the 2020 season

Anthony Rizzo

After a bit of a down year in 2018, Anthony Rizzo was back with a bang in 2019, posting a 141 wRC+ and hitting 27 big flies. He also picked up his third Gold Glove.

Fangraphs’ projections for the shortened season have Rizzo as the most productive hitter among first basemen (assuming Cody Bellinger is playing the outfield).

The post-Utley master of being hit by pitches, Rizzo is a different profile to some of the high strikeout guys in consideration for this list. His strikeout rate of just 14% is bettered only by Gurriel.

The next player comes close in that category, however, at just over 15%.
