Identifying the best Suns trade targets before the 2022 deadline

Home » NBA » Phoenix Suns » Suns trade deadline 2022: Potential Suns trade targets

Against all odds, reports claim that the Suns’ trade deadline 2022 will be quite agitated. You wouldn’t expect that from a team that was just two wins way from an NBA championship, but even great things can be better.

The Phoenix Suns have once again been the best team in the Association and it hasn’t been close. They boast a physical, smart defense, and have one of the all-time great point guards leading the offense. Even with Deandre Ayton in and out of the lineup due to injury, they’ve managed to dominate.

Most NBA trade deadline predictions had the Suns as sneaky buyers if the price was right. Now, the latest Suns trade news claim that they won’t hesitate to pull the trigger even if that means absorbing big salaries. Clearly, they want to win right now.

But what could you give a team that already has it all? Chris Paul is a top-notch playmaker, Devin Booker an efficient scorer, Deandre Ayton a dominant interior presence, and Mikal Bridges a Defensive Player of the Year candidate. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the few players who could actually improve a near-perfect roster.

3. Dennis Schroder

The Boston Celtics have been one of the most disappointing teams in the league. And as such, most of their players should be up for grabs ahead of the trade deadline. Now, some claim that Dennis Schroder has become one of the Suns’ trade targets.

Cameron Payne had a breakout season last year and was outstanding in the playoffs. He even subbed in for the injured Chris Paul and had some streaky, flashy performances as Monty Williams‘ X-factor. But, as expected, that wasn’t sustainable.

The Suns need a scoring threat off the bench and Schroder is one of the best in the league in that regard. He infamously signed a team-friendly deal, which could only help any transaction. Also, the Celtics are reportedly interested in Jalen Smith, so it’s a win-win move.

2. Eric Gordon

The Houston Rockets and Eric Gordon are trying to part ways but matching his salary could be quite a tricky task. Gordon, despite his age, has proven that he still has a lot left in the tank and that he could be a solid contributor for a contender.

The Suns need another three-point shooting threat and Gordon could provide just that. Moreover, he could slide into the starting lineup, or play both guard spots coming off the bench. That’s the kind of offensive versatility they need.

However, the downside is obvious as well. He has the lowest upside among all of the Suns trade targets and isn’t getting any younger. Also, even if he’s still pretty good, he’s not likely to be able to live up to that big contract at this point in his career.

1. Josh Hart

Even though he doesn’t get much credit, Josh Hart has always been one of the best role players in the league. He’s shooting over 50% from the floor, is a great rebounder for his height and position, and can guard multiple spots on the court.

Hart has never been a go-to guy and doesn’t need many touches to make an impact on the offensive end. He’s a team-first guy who’ll take charges and put his body on the line if that’s what it takes to get a win. And he doesn’t make that much money.

The New Orleans Pelicans are expected to be sellers at the trade deadline after yet another tough season. And once again, it seems like all players not named Zion Williamson or Brandon Ingram are available in trade talks. So, what’s not to like here?
