The time Kobe Bryant tried to recruit Dirk Nowitzki

Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki both spent their entire careers with the team that drafted them.

Bryant spending 20 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and Dirk spending 21 seasons with the Dallas Mavericks.

However back when Nowitzki was a free agent, Bryant gave him a call to try and persuade the power forward to come and join him in Los Angeles.

This was bought up a couple of times through the years by Bryant.

At the 2016 All-Star game, which would be Bryant’s last, he said “I’ve always had a great relationship with Dirk, because we are both extremely competitive.”

Bryant said he knew Dirk was going to stay in Dallas but he had to call him out of respect and said “Dude, everybody’s looking around at all these free agents, I just thought I’d shoot you a text, if you want to come to LA.”

What must have been an intriguing offer for Nowitzki would be one he turned down.

Dirk said that he was a life time Mavericks player, just like how Kobe was a lifetime Laker.

Unfortunately for us NBA fans we can only imagine what a Kobe, Dirk duo would have been like, to see them go up against teams like the San Antonio Spurs, Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat would have been another great sporting spectacle.

One thing is for sure – Kobe and Dirk would have been a must-watch duo. What other superstar pairings could have happened? Which would have been the most dominant?
