Three low-cost trade deadline targets for the Cleveland Cavaliers

The majority of the Cavs trade rumors 2022 address their problem in the backcourt, especially after Collin Sexton and Ricky Rubio suffered major injuries. In order to contend, they need to add more firepower next to Darius Garland.

Cavs trade rumors 2022

The Cavaliers are looking to be buyers ahead of the trade deadline. After all, they exceeded a lot of expectations this season and are looking to compete in the post-LeBron James era.

After being one of the worst defensive teams for the past few seasons, Cleveland is one of the best defensive teams in the league right now. They are ranked third in defensive rating and fifth in opponent’s field goal percentage.

Their defense passes the eye test with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley anchoring the paint, and Isaac Okoro manning up the perimeter. The overall length of this Cavs team is just unfair.

Now, what the Cavaliers need is more firepower in the backcourt. They obviously need to fill the void that Sexton and Rubio left. Darius Garland is playing at an all-star level but he can’t handle all the scoring and playmaking duties as a guard.

Here are the top three Cavaliers trade targets…

Caris LeVert

Caris LeVert headlines the latest Cavs trade news out there. He’s one of the best players available ahead of the trade deadline since he’s a versatile scorer.

Additionally, he’s still young and fits their timeline. He was a breakout player in his last season in Brooklyn with 20.2 points, 5.2 assists, 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 three-pointers made, and 1.4 steals per game.

This season, LeVert is averaging 18.7 points, 4.4 assists, 3.8 rebounds per game on 45% shooting on the field and 32% from beyond the arc. This is a solid line from a player who just came back from a life-threatening medical issue in his kidney.

Given that there are no major suitors for LeVert, it makes sense for the Cavs to aggressively pursue him. After all, they have a lot of assets. The asking price isn’t cheap though since the Pacers are looking for at least two first-round picks in exchange for the young stud.

Dennis Schroder

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Cleveland is eyeing Dennis Schroder ahead of the trade deadline. It makes sense since he’s a solid point guard who can score and make plays.

Schroder is currently averaging 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game on 44% shooting on the field and 34% from beyond the arc. His numbers were on a steady decline this season but the blame can be put on the new coaching and the iso-heavy Celtics offense.

Given that Sexton and Rubio freed up a lot of minutes on the backcourt, Schroder can absorb all of these minutes and prove that he deserves a huge payday in the upcoming offseason.

Schroder signed a cheap one-year, $5 million contract with the Celtics in the offseason. Even if it’s a one-year rental, he’s still one of the best Cavs trade targets since Boston is looking to get something in return before the deadline, rather than lose him in the offseason next summer.

The Cavs could offer some of their role players and second-round picks in exchange for him. They could also offer a first-round pick to make the deal enticing.

Eric Gordon

The Rockets are clearly rebuilding with the way their season is headed right now. Eric Gordon has no business anymore to play for a young and developing team. He needs to be on a contender.

The Cavs could target the sharpshooting veteran ahead of the trade deadline. Gordon is averaging 14.2 points on 2.2 three-points made and 43% shooting from beyond the arc. His three-point shooting is promising for this team.

Gordon’s $18 million salary this season easily matches Rubio’s $17 million expiring contract. Gordon is still owed $19.5 million in 2022-2023 and has a non-guaranteed salary of $20 million in 2023-2024. The Cavs will definitely need to throw a first-round pick in the deal to make this work.

We often see his name pop on the latest NBA trade deadline predictions with how easy the trade works for both teams. It’s just a matter of time for Cleveland to make a big decision.
