How to choose an NBA team to support

Choosing an NBA team to support is like picking someone to marry. It’s not something that you should easily leave or jump to another one when things go awry. You have to commit through the highs and lows. Thus, you have to be ready to support that team both in the championship and tanking times.

How to choose an NBA team to support

Now, let’s look at how to choose an NBA team to support if you’re committing to becoming an NBA fan now.

Team color, uniform, and logo

Let’s start off with the most basic one. This may sound shallow at first, but a lot of people (especially new fans) actually consider which team to support based on the team’s color, uniform, and even logo. The team’s aesthetics might be enough for you to support that team.

Consider the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors have one of the best team colors, uniforms, and logo in the league.

Location

If you ever visited the United States (or Canada), did you ever fall in love with a particular city or state?

It may be due to a city’s culture, people, environment, etc. Whatever your reason may be, choosing a team based on location is a good one. Just make sure that particular city or state has an NBA team.

And for those who actually are currently living in the US, you might have a headstart on knowing your city or state. After all, it’s fun to support a local team wherein those around you are diehard fans as well. Just imagine the feeling when your team won a championship! The entire city or state goes wild to celebrate.

Favorite player

You can also pick your favorite team based on the team of your favorite player. For example, if you’re a big fan of Luka Doncic, you might want to support the Dallas Mavericks.

Easy, right? Well, hold it right there. This is actually hard to sustain because of two reasons:

First, what if your favorite player was traded or signed to another team? Would you still support that team? The answer is probably no. It’s hard to support his previous team because he’s no longer there anymore. Big chances are, you’ll support his new team.

And second, what if your favorite player was riddled by major injuries? Would you still support that team? Again, the answer is probably no since it’s hard to watch a team when your favorite player is not even playing.

Picking a team based on your favorite player is still okay but you have to factor in the reasons above. Jumping constantly from team to team is just being a “bandwagon”.

Team market

You can also pick a team based on its market. Choosing depends on your preference if you like the hype with bigger market teams or the peace with smaller market teams.

New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, and Golden State Warriors are some of the big market teams which play under bright lights. These teams have the best viewership and have a large fanbase. Thus, you can see them more often on television, social media, and online streams.

If you are in the UK, you can start watching NBA games here.

Teams such as Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Oklahoma City Thunder are some of the small market teams. These teams don’t get a lot of buzz and noise.

Culture and organization

Choosing your team based on a team’s culture and organization is an honorable decision.

However, it might take a little bit of time. You need to do a deeper dive into each team’s organization and check if they match your goals as a fan. And definitely, you need to watch a lot of their games as well to see if they promote a winning culture.

But one thing’s for sure, you will stick to this team’s highs and lows through time.

If you want a classy and timeless organization, you can pick the San Antonio Spurs. If you want a gritty team that promotes the underdog mentality, you can consider the Miami Heat.
