Kyle Lowry is one of the best upcoming free agents in the 2021 offseason. At 35 years old, his leadership, three-point shooting, and playmaking are valuable to any team with championship aspirations. The question is: Which teams actually make sense in signing the veteran point guard?
Kyle Lowry free agency 2021
After his nine seasons with the Raptors, Lowry is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the 2021 NBA offseason. Given his leadership and offensive skill set, he’s one of the highly sought point guards in the summer.
Let’s take a look at the five best Kyle Lowry free agency destinations…
Mavericks
Dallas makes sense as a potential destination for Kyle Lowry. They badly need a second scorer and playmaker outside of Luka Doncic. Signing him would address their lack of shot creators who can create for themselves. In addition, Lowry can be that consistent “second guy” they are longing for, especially in the playoffs.
The question is how much are the Mavericks willing to pay him? They don’t have a lot of cap space, especially when Tim Hardaway Jr. re-signs and Josh Richardson picks up his player option. If Dallas is deadset on signing Lowry. they should make room for him in free agency.
Knicks
The Knicks overachieved in the 2020-2021 regular season. Although they didn’t get past the first round, their campaign was successful enough to attract bigger free agents. Obviously, they were a young team who has no playoff experience. What they need right now is to get a veteran guard that can lead them to the playoffs—and the answer is Kyle Lowry’s free agency.
Signing Lowry to a two-year deal makes sense as they have a lot of cap space. It will make New York an instant playoff contender that has the potential to reach the ECF next season. This will also give them flexibility on signing bigger free agents in the 2022 offseason.
Lakers
Like DeRozan, Lowry expressed his interest to join the Lakers. Joining forces with LeBron James and Anthony Davis will make Los Angeles instant championship favorites. After all, they badly need a consistent third option, which is obviously not Dennis Schroder.
Lowry checks all the boxes they need in the backcourt. His three-point shooting will open a lot of space for James and Davis to operate in the paint.
However, it’s clear that the Lakers don’t have enough cap space to sign him right off the bat. Although it’s possible if they go in a sign-and-trade route involving him and Schroder. It’s time for Rob Pelinka to pull off his magic and snag one of the best upcoming free agents in the offseason.
76ers
There’s no better story than Kyle Lowry reuniting with his hometown. His addition can help the Sixers break past the second round.
Lowry would also help Philly’s shooting struggles in the backcourt. He’s been averaging better than 38% from three for the past six years. Also, his shot-creating and playmaking ability will take the point guard duties off of Simmons’ shoulders. His three-point shooting is enough to make driving lanes for Ben Simmons, Tobias Harris, and Joel Embiid.
Heat
Kyle Lowry’s veteran presence can elevate the Heat in the playoffs. His arrival would address Miami’s very thin point guard rotation (Goran Dragic and Kendrick Nunn).
Dragic has a team option this offseason. If the Heat is serious in signing Lowry, they must decline Dragic and Iguodala’s team option. And it was rumored that Miami is very interested in signing him.
His shooting and playmaking complement Butler and Adebayo’s inside game. This trio is enough to make some noise in the Eastern Conference. After all, Lowry has a close relationship with Butler already and would fit seamlessly with their “underdog” mentality.
